HDCP stands for High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, which translates to “High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection”. The technology is designed to protect against unauthorized copying of media content transmitted via DVI, Display Port, and HDMI interfaces.
However, this feature is mainly used to protect high-resolution videos, regardless of the file format. Often High-bandwidth DCP is used to protect Blu-ray discs, as they are the ideal medium for recording high-quality movies today.
Technical Features
It is licensed by Digital Content Protection LLC, a subsidiary of Intel Corporation. According to the terms, for each device that supports this technology, you need to make royalties.
The three main systems that make this protocol work are:

- The encryption mechanism protects the data stream from unauthorized copying and interception;
- The key revocation algorithm blocks the ability to play content on a non-HDCP device.

This encryption has been optimized to work with 4K content. And here’s the problem: To play movies in 4K format, all devices used must be able to handle this encryption standard.
