RDS (Radio Data System)
RDS (Radio Data System) is an international multi-purpose standard for transmitting special messages over the radio in the VHF band.
You must enable this function to receive a Radio Data System signal. Transmission quality must ensure reliable reception of information in the ultra-short range. The system transmits traffic information in parallel with the broadcast of other programs.
What is RDS on the Radio?
A system that transmits digital data along with FM radio audio signals. RDS shows the name of the broadcasting station and displays the transmitted text information in the form of a running line on the display.
Other features automatically switch to an information summary of the state of the movement. When the signal is weakened at the main frequency it switches to alternative frequencies. Search for a broadcasting station by a given type of program, and automatic setting of the exact time.
Basic Functions
In addition to broadcasting standard traffic reports, the system also transmits other data.
- Gear recognition (PI). The display of the radio shows the name of the radio station and the broadcast frequency.
- Program Content Recognition (PTY). By changing the settings of the receiver, you can select music, news, etc. According to the specified parameters, the receiver will select the program and switch to it. There are about 30 types of programs.
- Change the sound volume (MS). Automatically adjusts the settings when the transmission type is changed.
- List of replacement frequencies (AF). Automatic frequency selection when the quality of program reception deteriorates. Switches to a range with the same gear.
- Recognition of programs that transmit traffic announcements (TA/TP).
RDS Features
- PI – Displays on the radio display the name of the received program and its operating frequency;
- AF – Automatically reconfigures the frequency of receiving the program. In case of signal deterioration, to another, through which the same program is transmitted.
- PS – Informs about the name of the programs transmitted by the radio station;
- TP – Gives messages about the order of organization of traffic on the track.
- TA – This allows you to get urgent information about changes in traffic conditions.
Optional Features
- EON – Provides switching of the receiver to another channel, which is currently receiving a traffic message;
- PTY – Identifies the type of program;
- MS – Automatically switches the volume, depending on the received program;
- CT – Updates the time depending on the time zone;
- DI – Indicates the type of transmitted signal;
- RT – Used to transmit up to 64 characters of text messages that are displayed on the receiver’s display;
- RP – Used to send paging messages;
- EWS – Used only in emergency situations and can only be received by special receivers;
- IH – Used for home use by station operators;
- ODA – Open data applications that can be transmitted in conjunction with RDS signals;
- TDC – Reserves 32 channels for the transmission of any data;
- DGPS – Corrects the data of the GPS satellite navigation system, increasing the accuracy of determining the coordinates;
- TMC is a traffic message channel that transmits coded traffic information.
How to Enable RDS?
Not every car radio is equipped with the RDS function. Because this standard is European. Most likely the Chinese device does not have it. If the radio is made for a European consumer, it has this option.
This suggests that the head unit can receive the appropriate signals and inform about the situation on the roads. In addition, you can configure the available options and not search for the desired stations while the car is moving.
You can turn on the RDS mode by pressing the corresponding button located on the front panel. If it is not there, then you need to go to the main menu and select the desired option.
